Visual Display Unit VDU Assessment  Galway:


Display Screen Equipment ( DSE ) or more commonly known as Visual Display Units ( VDU ), Computer Workstations.
Employees who use VDU’s / DSE’s for more than 1 hour per day must have a VDU risk assessment carried out as per the  Safety , Health and Welfare at Work ( General Application Regulation 2007 )
It is the legal requirement of the employer to have VDU / DSE assessments carried out to ensure minimal risk for the employee.

What is a DSE / VDU assessment
Display Screen Equipment or Visual Display Unit assessment, this is where an assessor carries out a risk assessment of each employees workstation.
The assessor will observe the employee in their normal work environment.
The assessor and the employee will discuss and record the working environment and apply corrective actions to minimise the risk to the employee.
The assessor will advise the employee of the best practice to try to minimise, fatigue, musculoskeletal disorder, such as the correct positioning of the desk, the chair, the screen, lighting, etc.

 
DSE / VDU assessment Aim
The aim of the DSE / VDU assessment is firstly to minimise any risk to the employee ( such as fatigue, back pain, neck pain, wrist pain ( carpal tunnel ), eye strain, etc. ) Where adjustments to the workstation can be done immediately, there will be done and recorded on the report.
The assessment also satisfies the legal requirement that the employer must carry out DSE / VDU risk assessments.

 

DSE / VDU assessment Objectives
On completion of the DSE / VDU assessment the employee workstation will meet the requirements of the Safety , Health and Welfare at Work ( General Application Regulation 2007 )
The employee will have an understanding of how to carry out adjustments to their own work station to minimise risk.

Here are some of the items covered during the assessment
  • The assessor will observe the employee in their normal work environment.
  • The assessor will discreetly identify if the employee is or is not experiencing discomfort or pain when using the equipment ( where adjustments to the workstation can be done immediately they will )
  • Workstation assessment, desk position/ adjustment
  • Chair assessment / adjustment
  • Screen distance, height / adjustment
  • Screen location,effected by external lighting / windows
  • Need for foot rests / adjustment
  • Desk layout
  • Report provided to the employer on completion of the assessment.

DSE / VDU assessment duration
Typically each assessment should take approximately 30 mins 

 
Who in the workplace should have the assessment done?
People who use VDU’s / DSE’s for more than 1 hour per day must have a VDU risk assessment carried out, this includes employers, employees, self employed people, in all workplaces.

 
Location:
The assessment must be carried onsite at each workstation, assessments are carried out throughout Galway , Mayo and nationwide
